Not necessarily. They are Nu-Metal, which is a sub-genre of rock. Also they incorporate rap into their music which just pushes them farther away from being "metal".
However, you could call them metal but you would be ran off the forum. Slipknot sucks even when not considered metal.

I suppose you would call them metal. But good metal, no. Good metal, with very few exceptions, strongly relies on some sort of melodic device, IE minor scales or harmonic minor. The musicians' technical ability also plays a key role in this, both of which Slipknot shits at the very idea of.

They're metal. You mosh to metal music, I've seen moshin' (actual moshin' not talkin' about hardcore dancing) at Slipknot shows before. You don't mosh to rock/hard rock.

There's moshing at rap gigs. That doesn't make the rapper metal.

EPIC FAIL.
People mosh at Chiodos. You gonna call Chiodos metal now?
I've seen people hardcore dance during Megadeth. So by your rules, that would make Megadeth hardcore?

Yellowcard has done the wall of death. Does that make them metal? That is some terrible logic, sorry. Especially when people mosh at hard rock and punk shows...

Like I said Metal but not popular among metal elitist. Nu-Metal is not a sub-genre of rock. Of course the line between rock and metal is thin sometimes.

Dragonforce and The Sword aren't popular among "metal elitists" either but they are still considered metal. Whether or not a band is liked has nothing to do with what kind of music it is.
Slipknot is not metal. It does have some metal influences but that isn't enough to make it metal. Slipknot along with Korn fit perfectly into the nu-metal genre and as such are considered to be nu-metal.

Fuck all you all , I am not a huge slipknot fan but honestly they are very much metal in my book, and always kick ass at every show I saw them at, I saw there first tour before the album hit real large and hung out with them for like 10 minutes after. They are very cool guys, and IMO vry talented. Think 100 degrees outside, 1000 mile an hour metal jumping up and down...ohh yeah with masks on??? That hardcore man. IMy favs. are Bile, slayer, early Sepultura/ nailbomb, Thrill Kill Cult, Obituary, Cradle of Filth (before I met them---They are prick bastards, met them at record connection in Cols. years ago their first time in the states, andthey were ultimate pricks, they played the Al Rosa that night and mentioned how much they hated americans and shit... But they love our black metal money..LOL Anyways even though slipknow likes to play dress up they kick ass in my book, their problem is that now they have to wear their "costumes" even if they dont want to as it sells records and shows, too many bitches just show up to see what their masks look like this year.... SAD REALLY
