LIVENATION.COM DISTRIBUTES MORE THAN 428,000 FREE TICKETS OVER FOUR DAYS
When Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne and the world’s largest live music company, Live Nation, announced in February their plans to stage the 2007 OZZFEST as a free show, some industry people said it would never work.
Today OZZFEST yet again has made history, as the fans clearly have spoken.
Over the past four days, tickets for all 24 shows were distributed to a frenzy of music fans. More than 428,000 tickets in all were given away through LiveNation.com, marking the largest number of free tickets distributed in the United States in the history of the concert business. In a staged release and via various sponsor sites, including Monster Energy, Jagermeister, FYE, Pilgrim Films, Hustler Lingerie and WWE, LiveNation.com enabled fans to enter exclusive codes to obtain tickets beginning Friday, June 8. More than 228,000 tickets were distributed yesterday alone, with the last ticket given away just after midnight. The tickets were completely free without surcharges of any kind.
For this year’s historic “Freefest”--which will give fans the rock experience of their lives at a price that’s hard to beat -- headliner Ozzy Osbourne will be joined by Lamb of God, Static X, Lordi, Hatebreed, Behemoth, Mondo Generator, Nile, Ankla, Circus Diablo, The Showdown, 3 Inches of Blood, Daath, Chthonic and In This Moment.

Since 1996, OZZFEST has been a virtual breeding ground for rising bands. The festival has been instrumental in igniting the careers of platinum-selling artists like System of a Down, Disturbed, Linkin Park, Incubus, Slipknot, Godsmack, Avenged Sevenfold, Mudvayne, Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage and Lacuna Coil, among others. It was cited as “one of rock’s biggest juggernauts” in the cover feature of Sunday's New York Times' “Arts and Leisure” section (6/25/06). This year marks the 12th anniversary of the hard rock spectacular.
The 24-city earth-pounding 12th annual OZZFEST will launch July 12 in Seattle, WA at the White River Amphitheatre. Next week, two albums by Taiwan’s premier metal act ChthoniC – dubbed the “Black Sabbath of Asia” by their home country’s largest newspaper, and soon to be the first-ever Asian act to take part in Ozzfest – will finally be released in North America. Relentless Recurrence, initially released in 2002, and last year’s A Decade On the Throne live double album/DVD will continue the momentum started by the acclaimed Seediq Bale, the group’s first American release.
The music of ChthoniC (pronounced THON-ick) focuses in part on the history of the Taiwanese people. The band has even christened its upcoming international tour – which will commence in suburban Seattle when the group kicks off the summer’s first Ozzfest – "UNlimited," in part to protest how the United Nations (UN) limits Taiwan's full participation as an independent country. Set to a riveting soundtrack of symphonic black metal, Relentless Recurrence relays a Taiwanese folk tale about a demonic ghost hell-bent on revenge. Like the group’s other recordings, the album sees ChthoniC use a Hena, a traditional Asian instrument comparable to a violin, to emphasize the legend’s sorrow and grief. Meanwhile, A Decade On the Throne is an engrossing live double album/DVD set recorded before a sold-out crowd in the band’s home country, and features guest performances by the so-called Oriental Orchestra as well as the Taipei Ladies’ Choir. It will be released in a lavish digibook with special artwork and a velvet covering.
Though the band’s image is reminiscent of the black metal legends of Scandinavia, ChthoniC’s use of corpse paint is inspired by the history of their own culture. In Taiwanese folklore, deities known as the “Eight Generals” wear corpse paint to become empowered with Taoist spirits that give them the power to judge good and evil. It is this spirit that the band conveys on stage.
ChthoniC has been pushing boundaries throughout their career, and having singlehandedly launched an extreme metal scene in their home country, the group now sets their sights squarely on the rest of the world. The band will continue taking its music abroad in August when it performs at Wacken Open Air, Germany's largest annual metal festival, and it will embark on its first full European tour this fall. And though ChthoniC -- like all rotating second-stage Ozzfest bands -- will have just 20 minutes to make its case on tour this summer, the group hopes its message reverberates long after their final notes are played.

The unquestionable leaders of the thrash metal renaissance, 3 INCHES OF BLOOD, will tour this summer as one of OZZFEST 2007's featured acts, bringing their "raging Judas Priest-meets-Slayer attack" to audiences across the country. The Vancouver, BC-based metal warriors have also announced a slew of "OFF-FEST" shows that will see the band joining forces with LAMB OF GOD, HATEBREED and BEHEMOTH for upwards of twenty live dates that promise to be massive in scope.
In addition to metal fans across the country proving their love of 3 INCHES OF BLOOD's devastating mix of mind-boggling musical proficiency, skyscraping vocal acrobatics and lyrical themes rife with fantastical imagery, the band has found an enthusiast in legendary JUDAS PRIEST vocalist Rob Halford. Known quite simply as the "Metal God", Halford is known for his towering vocals and long-time championing of all things metal. Appearing on WDHA's "Metal Mania" show (the Friday night metal show hosted by "Scott Evil", which airs in Northern and Western New Jersey), Halford called in espousing his love for 3IOB, whose sound is often compared to that of the mighty PRIEST themselves.
"I was listening to 'em the other day in my car driving around and they came on the radio," Halford said. "And I heard this guy's voice. And I was like, 'My God, that's like 'Painkiller'. This guy's got some pipes.' And then they've got this real brutal death metal voice as well. I think it's a really unusual combination. But that's a great band. Everybody should keep an eye out for them. I'm a hardcore metalhead and I think it's wonderful when new bands come along and kick up a fuss like 3 INCHES OF BLOOD, so I'll be trying to check those guys out live in concert."

3 INCHES OF BLOOD recorded "Fire Up the Blades" at Vancouver's legendary Armoury Studios (AC/DC, KISS) and Mushroom Studios (Queensrÿche) with producer Joey Jordison (Slipknot) and engineer Dan Turner. Word on the electronic street that Ozzfest is SOLD OUT. Though true, this comes with a caveat: Monster Energy has a secret stash of free Ozzfest tickets you can still get through specially marked Monster Energy 4-packs and 8-packs at retail outlets across the United States.
As word got out metal-based Internet chat rooms lit up, causing a small furor and creating a rush of cooperation among fans to find the specially-marked Monster multi packs.
“Just got a 4-pack at Walgreens...and I know Giant Eagle and CVS have them” said one poster. “Wow I am so happy, I just got the tix. I got the 4-pack at CVS if anyone wants to know,” said another.
With Ozzfest’s generous ticket give away to its legions of loyal fans tapped out across the nation, Monster Energy is the only remaining way to score free tickets for the event – which starts in Seattle on July 12th and rolls on down the highway through August, culminating on the 30th in West Palm Beach, Fla.
“We saw this one coming. Ozzy and Ozzfest have the most incredible and loyal fans and we knew the main stash of tickets would be gone in a day,” said Monster’s Marketing VP Sam Pontrelli. We’re stoked to still be offering fans a shot a pair of tickets,” added Monster music guru Brent Hamilton.
